How It Works

ODU Distance Learning can be a wonderful alternative for students without time or options to get to main campus.

Exams & Proctors

The process for taking exams and tests depends on the delivery method of each course.

NOTICE: Some faculty are using an online proctoring service called ProctorU.

Online

Typically, students taking online courses take exams and tests online in ODU's course management system. Refer to your syllabus or contact your instructor for details.

If you are unable to take an exam at the time it has been scheduled, first contact the course instructor for permission to take the exam/test at a later time.

Within Hampton Roads (VS2)

If you attend distance learning classes at one of ODU’s Higher Education Centers or military centers in the Hampton Roads area, please contact the test coordinator at your center. Confirm your information by e-mail to the center’s testing coordinator; then inform your instructor of your testing location.

If you attend distance learning classes on ODU’s main campus (origination classroom), please inform your instructor that you will be taking your test/exam in the Gornto Center.

If you have to miss an exam, contact your course instructor for permission to take it at a later time. If approved, ask your instructor to notify your site staff of this authorization.

Video Stream or 2-way in Virginia (VS5)

Virginia students taking ODU courses through Distance Learning should be attached to one of ODU’s extended classroom locations at a community college or military installation. You are required to take tests/exams at your location of record. Please contact the test coordinator or Site Director at your site and inform your instructor of your testing location.

If you live a considerable distance from your site, you may be approved to take exams at a local facility, such as a library or school, with a pre-arranged proctor. Please contact both your instructor and Site Director to have an alternative arrangement approved.

If you have to miss an exam, contact your course instructor for permission to take it at a later time. If approved, ask your instructor to notify your site staff of this authorization.

Video Stream or 2-way outside Virginia (VS7)

If you are taking classes at an ODU extended classroom site in Arizona or Washington State, you will take exams there at your site.

Students outside of Virginia who are not associated with an ODU Distance Learning site will need to identify a suitable proctor and location for taking exams.

If you have to miss an exam, contact your course instructor for written permission to take it at a later time. If approved, forward a copy of your instructor's written permission to your site, your proctor, and Anita Wiggins-Bailey (awiggin@odu.edu).

Steps to take proctored exams

  1. Identify a facility, such as a college or university, military installation, library, or similar professional organization in your vicinity and obtain the commitment of a representative of that organization to provide proctoring services for you at that location. Authorized proctors include faculty members, employees at college/university testing centers, employees at public or educational libraries, or employees at military education centers. Proctors can never be a coworker or a relative, nor can they be current students themselves, either at ODU or at any other college.
  2. Both the student and the selected proctor must register online at http://clt.odu.edu/proctor/.
  3. Clarify with your instructor date/time you should take each test. Make an appointment with your proctor to take each required test. Contact your proctor at least two business days or 48 hours before your scheduled appointment to make sure they have received the test. If the test has not been received, contact ODU Distance Learning at 1.800.968.2638.
  4. Meet your proctor at your arranged location. You must show a picture ID prior to testing.
  5. Provide your proctor with a pre-paid envelope addressed to ODU Distance Learning (address below) to return your finished exam. All materials sent by the proctor to ODU Distance Learning must have tracking capabilities, whether by UPS, FedEx, or other carrier. If you need rapid delivery, you are responsible for providing the proctor with an addressed pre-paid overnight-delivery envelope. The test must be mailed by the proctor only, never the student, to:
    Harry Boucicaut
    ODU Distance Learning
    104 Gornto Building
    Norfolk, VA 23529

Please make these arrangements early in the semester! ODU Distance Learning must have a valid proctor registration on file in order to send your exam.

For students outside of the United States, all tests/exams are emailed to the proctor.

Navy College Students

Tests/exams taken for Navy students who are taking CD-ROM courses through NCPACE are administered and proctored by their command NCPACE POC. Tests/exams are shipped to the command's designated POC when that command's education request is approved. No Proctor Request Form is required for NCPACE students.

Navy students taking CD-ROM courses not funded through NCPACE should follow the specific guidelines and procedures provided with their program and course materials.

Steps for Navy College students to take proctored exams

  1. 2. The Procor Request Form (PDF) must be completed for each class by you and the representative of the proctoring organization and returned to Military Distance Learning. Print out, complete, and fax the proctor form to the appropriate number listed on the form. The form can also be scanned and emailed as an attachment.
  3. Clarify with your instructor date/time you should take test and call to make an appointment with your proctor to take each required test. Present picture identification prior to testing.
  4. Provide your proctor with an addressed pre-paid return envelope. All materials sent by the proctor to ODU Distance Learning must have tracking capability, whether by UPS, FedEx, or other carrier. If you need rapid delivery, you are responsible for providing the proctor with an addressed pre-paid overnight-delivery envelope. The test must be mailed by the proctor only, never the student.
