How It Works

ODU Distance Learning can be a wonderful alternative for students without time or options to get to main campus.

Learning On-siteLearning On-site

By learning on-site at an extended campus, you can earn your degree close to home, but in a more traditional classroom setting. The Old Dominion Distance Learning program has locations at community colleges, military bases and education centers throughout Virginia and beyond. Find the site closest to you!

Here are the extended classroom delivery options.

Face-to-face

You attend class in the room with the professor where the broadcast or streamed class originates. Class activities at this location are broadcast to all Distance Learning extended campus locations.

Class activities appear on displays in the classroom. As there can be students in up to 24 additional locations participating in the course at the same time, you use microphones on the desks when you want to communicate with the instructor and other students.

Specifics

  • When you use the microphones, be sure to stay about 8” away from the speaker. Press the button to talk and lift your finger from the button when you’re done. Only one student can speak at a time.
  • Some instructors do require students to sign attendance sheets for each class.
  • If at any time during the class you experience technical difficulties, see your site staff for assistance.
  • Please be courteous to other students and turn off your cell phones, etc.

Miss a class? Want to review for an exam? No problem. All broadcast courses are available to registered students via an archive online in video stream format.

Satellite network of Extended Campus Locations

You attend class at an extended campus site to participate in a live, broadcast course where the students and instructor can talk to each other, and you can see the instructor. In this Old Dominion Distance Learning program option, the instructor is located at an origination location, usually on-campus, that is broadcast to all extended campus classroom locations.

Classes appear on displays in the classroom. There are microphones on the desktops that you use when you want to communicate with the instructor and other students. While classrooms at any given location may only have a few students in the room, there can be up to 24 additional locations with students participating in the course at the same time.

Specifics

  • Site staff will post a class schedule with room locations and times for your convenience. If there are any changes, your instructor and/or site staff will be sure to let you know.
  • When you use the microphones, be sure to stay about 8” away from the microphone. Press the button to talk and lift your finger from the button when you’re done. Only one student can speak at a time. Watch the monitor; the instructor will indicate if there are multiple people trying to talk at the same time.
  • Some instructors do require students to sign attendance sheets for each class.
  • If at any time during the class you experience technical difficulties, see your site staff for assistance.
  • Please be courteous to other students and turn off your cell phones, etc.
