MEM Admission Information

Please read all the admission requirements to know which applies to you. The answers to many questions about the program, admission requirements, tuition payments, and other topics can be found in our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) section. Eligible individuals interested in pursuing the Master of Engineering Management degree must complete an Old Dominion University Application for Graduate Admission (Navy Format) which may be downloaded from this page.

To be eligible for this CD-ROM program, applicants must be a graduate of the NPS-O and EEOW at a prototype or BRES, and fall into one of the following categories:

  • serving on active-duty in the U. S. Navy; or
  • Navy reservist (if residing more than fifty miles from ODU main campus or an ODU distance learning site); or
  • government service employee, BRES graduate, and assigned to NAVSEA-08; or
  • personnel assigned to Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory (Bettis) and Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory (KAPL); or
  • former active-duty U.S. Navy students who were accepted into the MEM program.

If students above desire to take courses offered on campus in Norfolk, Va or via television at an ODU distance learning site, they will still receive the twelve credit hours of advanced standing.

Other interested candidates may apply for the on campus or televised versions of the program; however, these applicants are not qualified for advanced academic standing as described above. Eligibility requirements for these students include:

  • Undergraduate Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology or Applied Science from an institution accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission (TAC) of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (TAC/ABET).
  • Undergraduate GPA of 3.0 for regular admission (may be waived to 2.75 for provisional admittance depending on academic preparation and GRE score)
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Graduate Record Examination
  • Work experience

Enrollment in the CD-ROM courses is reserved for students who meet the admissions criteria for the CD-ROM program. Refer to: www.eng.odu.edu for more information.

Each application is reviewed independently. Final approval rests with the Graduate Program Director.

Navy Officers, NAVSEA-08, Bettis, and KAPL personnel who have a Bachelors degree and have completed the Officers Navy Nuclear Power School (including Prototype) or BRES Program are awarded twelve hours of graduate credit. They can complete the MEM degree by taking six CD-ROM courses. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and letters of recommendation are waived for these applicants.

Please note that no more than 12 credit hours of transfer graduate coursework from any regionally accredited college or university may be applied to a graduate degree at Old Dominion University. If it is your intention to complete the degree program, your application as a degree-seeking candidate must be received concurrently with your first course registration or soon thereafter. If you continue to take classes without an approved degree application, you could be jeopardizing your chances of completing the degree without having to take additional courses. Contact the Graduate Program Director, Engineering Management Department if you have any questions.
