MEM Ashore: FAQs

Eligibility

Does a student have to be accepted into the program before he/she starts taking classes?
No. Eligible students may take up to two MEM courses as non-degree seeking students. However, if the student intends to receive the degree - Master of Engineering Management - he/she must submit a formal application for admission to Old Dominion University.

If I leave the Navy and become a civilian, can I still participate in this program through this website?
Former U. S. Navy students who were accepted into the MEM graduate program and successfully completed three CD-ROM courses while on active duty may request continuation in the program as civilians. Qualified students who are interested should contact the MEM Advisor, Kim Sibson for details/application. You may also continue the program through Old Dominion University's main campus or through one of its satellite centers. Please contact Old Dominion University for more details.

What if a student fails?
Two grades of a C or less and the student is no longer eligible for the program. The University does not have a policy of grade forgiveness. Students can retake the course, but the new grade will not 'erase' previous grades.

Is there a time limit for completing the masters program?
Yes. Current school policy is six (6) years. Students should work with their advisor if in need of an exception to this policy.

Tuition & Fees

What about the $40 application fee?
This fee can be paid with a check or money order. Simply staple the check or money order to the front of the form and send it to Old Dominion University. The application fee is waived for NCPACE students.

If I am participating in the Ashore program, when is my tuition due?

Tuition is due when a registration(s) is received and loaded into the University's student management system.  This normally occurs within ten working days of receipt.   We strongly encourage students to check their accounts through Leo Online and to establish an ODU email account to ensure receipt of any and all notices affecting their accounts.  The University does not send official notices to private student email accounts.   Failure to pay in a timely manner will result in the assessment of penalty fees and delinquent accounts may be referred to a collection agency.  Students have ten days from the term start date that they selected to drop the course.  After ten days, tuition is fully obligated even if the student does not finish the course.  Please contact us directly with any questions.

If I am enrolled through NCPACE, am I responsible for my tuition?

No. The Navy will pay the tuition upon your satisfactory completion of the course.  You will not be billed by the University for your enrollments through NCPACE.  However, your student account will reflect the Navy's liability, but the "Amount Due" that appears on your screen will be "zero".

Does TA cover the cost for this course?
Check the Office of Finance's link to the Tuition Assistance Program.

Student Resources

How can I check my ODU records?
You can check your records using Leo Online.   Follow the instructions to establish your PIN to access the system.  For first time students, it make take several weeks from the time you begin classes before you can access your accounts.

Who can serve as a test proctor?
Identify an accredited institution of higher education or military installation in your area and obtain permission from a representative of that organization to provide proctoring services there. Authorized proctors include faculty members, employees at college/university testing centers, military educational service officers, or employees at military education centers.

No relatives or fellow ODU students may serve as proctors.  The Proctor Request Form must be completed by you and the representative of the proctoring organization.

How do I contact my instructor?

For every course registration, students will receive an email, sent to the address shown on their registration form, informing them of their instructor's name and contact information.  We encourage students to stay in close contact with their instructors, as well as their advisor, Kim Sibson.  The email will include a copy of the program guide which the student should print out and retain for future reference.

Can I request additional time to complete the course if I cannot finish within the 90-day term?

Yes.  The program is very flexible as long as students contact us before their term date ends.  Extensions of up to sixty days may be granted with justification.  To request an extension, send email to navycollege@odu.edu.  For NCPACE students, extensions are approved by the Navy, not ODU.  See your command ESO for information.

What is a UIN?

A UIN is a University Identification Number.  You can access your UIN

through Leo Online.  Click on the Personal Information link to view your

UIN.

What is MIDAS and why do I need to sign up for it?

MIDAS (Monarch IDentification and Authorization System) is a log-in ID and

password management system that allows the user to create their own login

ID and create/manage their password. Access to services is authorized on

the basis of an individual's roles (faculty, staff, or student). Each

person has only one user ID that remains constant as roles change.

From the MIDAS home page, activate your MIDAS account and create your

security profile (this will allow you to set a new password if you forget

yours). You will be immediately forwarded to our "My Services" page. Review

the list of services (accounts) that you currently have active and those

for which you are eligible. Select the services that you want to activate

and submit your request. Your selected services will be activated and your

user name for each will display below the service name. Your password for

all activated services will match your MIDAS password.

Why do I need to have an authenticated ODU email address?

ODU sends all information to students via the ODU email address.  This

includes billing, registration and admissions information.  Students must

authenticate their email addresses via the MIDAS system.  ODU email

addresses can also be forwarded to another email account by filling out the

request form.

How can I check my grades?

Login to Leo Online with your UIN and PIN.  Click on the "Admissions,

Registration, Student Records, Graduation Information, Credit Card Payments

and Financial Aid" link.  Click on "Student Records".  Click on Academic

Transcript.

How can I request a transcript from ODU?

All requests for transcripts must be made in writing and must include the

student's signature.  No transcript will be released if a student has

financial or academic holds.  Students may request transcripts of work

completed at ODU by completing an Official Transcript Request Form.  The

fee for each official transcript is $5 and must accompany the transcript

request form.  Students may also print out unofficial transcripts from Leo

Online.
