Old Dominion University offers Science Courses Online

It's more convenient than ever to take courses for certification or recertification in Earth Science! Take advantage of four new, high-quality online courses from Old Dominion University.

  • Courses include geology, oceanography and astronomy!
  • Earn 12 of 18 credit hours currently required by Virginia for an endorsement in Earth Science
  • Teachers can acquire the other 6 credit hours through other state initiatives and opportunities such as the online meteorology course from Tidewater Community College

Online science courses from Old Dominion University make it easier to receive a quality education while attending to family and work. Online Students take web-based courses that are available any time, any place and at any pace. There are no regularly scheduled class meeting times. Typically, students can participate from any location. While course material and assignments may have specific completion deadlines, students can generally work through the course following their own schedules.

The Distance Learning Online Student Orientation will help you determine whether or not online learning is right for you. By completing this orientation, you will have an opportunity to become familiar with the requirements of online learning and feel more comfortable and confident about taking an online course. In addition, steps for pre-enrollment and enrollment are provided to you familiarize yourself with the enrollment process as a distant student.

OCEN 426/526 - Concepts in Oceanography for Teachers
GEOL 495/595 - Geology of the National Parks

How do I register for an online course?
To register for a course go to LeoOnline, the University's schedule of classes. Not all courses will be offered every semester.

What do I need to do to begin my online course once I have been admitted to the program and I have registered for my courses?
In order to begin your course you must first create an ODU Midas Account. Once you have your Midas account, a University email account will be created for your use. NOTE: you must have a university email account in order to access the online courses through Blackboard, the University's course management system.

Course Books/Material
All distance learning students should purchase all text book(s) prior to the start of class. Instructions on how to acquire these materials are provided on the Distance Learning website's Student Services section.

Tidewater Community College (TCC) Opportunity:
Teachers can easily add TCC's lower level online Meterology courses to our list of online earth science courses in order to work towards the credit hour requirement for certification/recertification. This popular online course is offered on a regular basis. Please visit the TCC website for more information about these course and how to register.
